The 1st Special Forces Group has played a significant role in the Philippines over the past several decades. This is especially true for the decade following the 9/11 attack against the United States. The 19th Special Forces Group would provide augmentation to this mission.

Following the terrorist attacks on the U.S. in September 2001 U.S. Army Special Operations Forces (ARSOF) stepped up their training engagements in the Philippines. This engagement included training up a counterterrorist force as well as countering insurgent and terrorist forces by implementing Security Assistance, Civic Action, and Humanitarian projects.
