In October 2017 four members of the
3rd Special
Forces Group were killed during an ambush of a ODA patrol
with a partner nation unit in Niger by a militant jihadist
group. The incident caused a furor within the media, Congress,
and American public - with many questioning why the ODA was on a
combat mission in Africa and the lack of support provided to the
Special Forces team
