U.S. Army Rangers

The U.S. Army Ranger Regiment has three Ranger battalions. The Rangers can trace their history to the period prior to the Revolutionary War. Ranger units were formed to fight during the King Phillips War and the French and Indian Wars.

Darby's Rangers. During World War II Ranger units were established to perform specialized missions. The first commander of the WWII era Rangers was Colonel William O. Darby - thus the nickname of Darby's Rangers. Darby was later killed in Italy.
