Culture > Bronze Bruce The Special Warfare Memorial Statue is located at Fort Bragg,
North Carolina. The statue represents a Special Forces NCO. The
statue was created in 1968 by sculptor Donald De Lue and
dedicated on November 19, 1969. It was the first Vietnam
memorial in the United States. The
12-foot high statue stands on a green granite pedestal that
brings the total height to 22 feet. It is located at the U.S.
Army Special Operations Command's Memorial Plaza at Fort Bragg,
North Carolina. The soldier, wearing the rank of Sergeant First Class, is
dressed in the jungle fatigues worn in Vietnam. He carries an
M16 rifle in his right hand. One of his feet is crushing a snake
that is symbolic of tyranny in the world. His left hand is
offering a gentle hand of friendship to the unseen oppressed of
				the world.

The cost of the statue was $100,000. Donations came from the
actor John Wayne ($5,000), Barry Sadler ($5,000), Robert
McNamara ($1,000), and many Special Forces soldiers.
