The 14th Special Forces Operational Detachment (SFOD) with
select members from the 77th SF Group, 12th, 13th, and 16th
SFODs, under the cover of the 8251st Army Service Unit,
transferred to Fort Shaffer, Hawaii from Fort Bragg, N.C.

The first Green Berets to deploy to South Vietnam were from
the 14th Special Forces Operational Detachment. Four SF
soldiers departed Hickam Field for Tan Son Hut Airfield, South
Vietnam, on June 25, 1957. They were the advanced party of a
12-man team that would train the initial cadre of the 1st
Observation Group (Vietnamese SF) at Nha Trang.
