8231st Army Unit

The 8231st Army Unit was a classified cover designation for U.S. Army Special Operational Detachments (12th, 13th, and 16th SFODs) activated in 1956 at Fort Bragg, NC that moved to Camp Drake, Japan in 1956 and later Okinawa in 1957.

The 12th and 13th SFODs were subordinate to the 16th SFOD. 1.

It would form the nucleus of the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) when it merged with the 14th Special Forces Operational Detachment (SFOD) on June 17, 1957. It was established to spearhead unconventional warfare in the Asia-Pacific theater.
